I gave him high Agility, Vigor, Fighting, Shooting and decent Stealth per your original concept of a sneaky, tough fighter. Humans get a free Edge, so I gave him Two-Fisted, although I don't know if that's what you want or if it was a side effect of him being a Ranger in D&D-land. There are a couple of Professional Edges you might like: Thief or Woodsman. They have a few pre-reqs, but might be what you want. You can find them in SW: Explorer's Edition.

You can also take some Hindrances to beef him up with extra skills, attributes or another Edge. Some Hindrances have mechanical effects, but all of them let you earn Bennies, like Traits in Burning Wheel.

Use Two-weapon Fighting whenever possible, it does the most damage to your foes.
If you're getting hit a lot, switch to sword and board to increase your AC.
If you're having a hard time hitting, switch to sword and board. TWF sacrifices accuracy for damage.

You've got Hide and Move Silently, per your concept. Use 'em to surprise bad guys.
The shield messes up physical skills. Sling it while sneaking, etc.
Tumble is the ultimate "get out of battle free" skill. It lets you move through danger zones without getting pummeled. Don't forget to Tumble if you're getting beat up.
